Hooked on Napa: Catching Stripers and Making Memories

Gear we used today:

If you’re looking for action-packed fishing, the Napa River stripers are here to deliver! We just hit the river with a crew of friends and reeled in 14 striper beauties—five over 19 inches, with the star of the day hitting a solid 24 inches.

Martin was the hero of the day. He caught and boated 9 fish today.

Our day started early, right at dawn. Picture this: mist on the water, a chill in the air, and the anticipation of that first hit. With temps dipping to 40 degrees, we slowed our troll to around 3.5-4 mph to match the morning calm—and it paid off. When it’s cold, slower speeds can make all the difference. Adjusting for the tide? Just add or subtract 1 mph depending on if you’re going with or against it, and you’ll be in the zone.

We kicked things off with two rattle traps and two Wild Thing deep divers, and it didn’t take long to strike. Our first fish—a feisty 17-inch striper—smashed the Italian Stallion Wild Thing lure, and minutes later, Captain America was hauling them in too.

That was our cue to switch to all deep-diver Wild Things, and from there, it was game on! Within a few hours, we’d filled the boat with 14 fish, each one more thrilling than the last.

Outgoing Tide Tactics

For an outgoing tide, it’s all about trolling those deep divers along the slough banks. Stick close to the bank, aiming for depths of 6–9 feet. Those deep-diving lures kick up silt, create noise, and drive the fish wild! Just set the rod in the holder, loosen the drag, and keep the clicker on. When that drag screams, you know it’s time to reel in a fighter.

Incoming Tide Tactics

With the incoming tide, mix it up by trolling in and out of slough mouths and along the banks of the main channel. Mornings? Slow it down to match the cool water, but by afternoon, crank up to 4.5 mph. The fish dial into specific colors, so keep testing until you find the one that gets them biting. Once you do, you’re in for a treat—double or even triple hook-ups are in your future!

Pro Tip: Stay on the Move

Napa River stripers are constantly on the move. When you find a hotspot, troll through them a couple of times, but don’t linger if the bites slow down. Reel up and chase the action elsewhere.

Mistakes? Don’t Get Stuck in One Mode

A common rookie mistake is sticking with one speed, direction, or lure for too long. Striper fishing is dynamic—keep experimenting with your speed, lures, depths, and locations until you find your winning setup. When the bites stop, it’s time to switch it up and keep that adventure rolling.

The Napa River is ready for you—grab your gear, hit the water, and chase those stripers! Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just looking to add a thrill to your week, now’s the time to plan your trip and make your own fishing story.
